Sunglasses

Sunglasses not only help protect your eyes from bright sunlight, but they also protect you from the wind, dust, the cold and even getting poked in the eye by a branch. I have tried many different sunglasses and I have recommendations for different situations.

  • General purpose. My favorite all-round sunglasses are the Oakley Half Jacket sunglasses that have interchangeable lenses. I use them with the Oakley VR28, which is an orange tint that works in a remarkable range of lighting conditions.
  • Night running. For running at night or in low light conditions you need either clear lenses or photochromic lenses that will go nearly clear. I have some clear lenses for my Oakly XXX, but I've found the Tifosi Tyrant Night Fototec to be even better as they are one of the few lenses that will go as clear as you need for running in the dark. This makes them ideal for running around sunrise or sunset as well as the middle of the night. (Make sure you get their "Night" Fototec, not the red or the green. They list for $70, but sometimes you find them on Amazon.com for much cheaper.)
  • Bright sunlight. For very bright conditions I have the Oakley "Titanium Iridium Polarized" which transmit only 12% of the light, but even they are not up to the sun in Death Valley, but it's hard to get anything much darker.
