One simple enhancement to running shorts and tights is to add a Toggle to the drawstring. It's much quicker and easier to use a toggle than to knot the drawstring, and is much less likely to get tangled. Having to stop during the race is bad enough without the added hassle of dealing with and knotted drawstring. The best toggles I've found are these double hole toggles shown below.
