Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) generally causes pain in the outside of the knee. The Iliotibial band (ITB) runs from the crest of the hip bone (Iliac) to the top of the shin bone (tibia) near the knee, hence the name. You can see the ITB in green in the picture below.
I have only had limited experience with ITBS, but I have found that treating the site of the pain (near the knee) or the ITB as it runs down the thigh to be ineffective. Instead, I have found it much more effective to focus on the Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL), shown below in red. I use the [[Thumper]] to massage the TFL, which can be quite painful, but I have found that my ITBS symptoms subside very rapidly after treatment. Your experience may differ from mine, but consider this as a method of treatment if you suffer from ITBS.

(My apologies for my poor drawing skills - other images of the ITB and TFL can be found with Google.)
